I was walking the dog this morning when I noticed beautiful daffodils coming up on the other side of my neighbor's fence. Daffodils are my favorite spring flower! They are one of the things that give me hope at the end of March that spring really is coming, they remind me of the Boston Marathon which is one of my favorite days here, and the deer don't eat them unlike the tulips. They're great. But while my neighbor's are fully blooming on one side of the fence, I noticed that on the other side they are smaller and kinda struggling.
.
The biggest difference.... they are just a few inches apart but getting VERY different amount of sun. The side with the bigger flowers faces south so it gets more sun. Very observant Sarah, what does this have to do with me?!?! I realized it's just like all of us. Those of us that get more sun, have bigger blooms and more joy, come up faster from hard times, and have what we need to grow into our full purpose.
A few things you can do to get yourself to the other side of the fence:
1. Literally get more sun in your eyeballs. Andrew Huberman's research tells us that on sunny days we need 5-10 minutes of sun exposure in the mornings and on cloudy or dark days we need as many as 60 minutes. Making sure you get this in the morning will help your circadian rhythm, vitamin D levels, mood, and sleep.
2. Move to a sunnier spot. Do you need a change of scenery or a change in who you are surrounding yourself with? This could be a new job, a new hobby, some new friends... regardless of how small the change might be, changing your environment can have a huge impact on your growth, the amount of joy you feel, and your satisfaction with your life.
3. Get some fertilizer. From time to time we all need a little extra support. Whether that is talking to a friend, mentor, therapist, or a coach. Having someone in our corner to cheer us on, ask us the hard questions, and hold us accountable to our own goals can make all the difference.
The good news? The flowers on the shady side of the fence will also bloom. They just take a little longer.
